I was using a wordlist which contained some duplicates, and I noticed when hashcat prints the # of passwords before starting, it included the # with the duplicates.

Does hashcat automatically remove duplicates before beginning the attack? Or does it trust the user to clean the list?

Hashcat does not have the ability to remove the duplicate hashes, the user must do so themselves.
