Yet "Progress.........: 26/26 (100.00%)" is exactly what you expect from single "?l".
Edit: Recreated similar result using "passpas?l " mask (with space at the end). Maybe try retyping the mask?

the ? in the mask is not the problem. Maybe an invisible (control) character somehow slipped in there.
