1. Is there any way to speed this up or tools that can do this hash mode faster than 1H/S?
2. How did they make it this slow such that we only get 1H/S across each GPU?

Scrypt was designed to withstand GPU attacks, try using CPU with this type of hash, you will get some quite more speed, but bruteforcing will still be a "no chance" hope you have a good clue about your password
