Password Cracking with ASIC - Alcanjp - 07-25-2024

Hello,

First I am familiar with the comments stated regarding the cracking with ASIC
https://hashcat.net/forum/thread-2057.html

However, it's now 11 years later, and the cost of electricity has significantly increased. I've been using Vast.ai, but I ran out of funds. My next attempt involves cracking a 10-character password consisting of both lower and upper case letters. Using 8 RTX 4090 GPUs, this would take over a month and cost around €3000.
I was given an Antminer S9 Series. Is there any possible way to use its resources to break a LUKS password? By modifying it.

EFF DES cracker
The EFF built custom hardware to brute-force DES back in 1998.  Was it ASIC?

No. Mining ASICs cannot be used to crack passwords.

ASICs aren't like GPUs or CPUs where you just run whatever code you want on them. The "AS" in "ASIC" stands for "Application-Specific", meaning it can do only what it was designed to do and can't be adapted. You can use an ASIC for LUKS cracking but only one that's specifically made for it and none exist
