No hashes loaded. No hashes loaded. - alexlehm - 10-17-2024

When trying to crack a single Veracrypt hash, I got the message

No hashes loaded.
No hashes loaded.

and after following the suggestions in another thread about format errors in the hash file, I found that running the command with setting -m nnnnn displayed a list of possible hash algos which did not include the one I had selected (which was something ... (legacy) for some reason). After selecting the hash I am expecting from the list that was displayed by the detection, it started accepting the hash in the file.

I wonder if there is a smarter way to detect that like trying the possible algos after one another or if it always makes sense to select a single one.

there are 2 ways for attacking veracrypt, the binary mode (old)  mode 137XX and the new ones 294XX

i would always recommend the new style as for this you can attack multiple hashes at once, next thing is, the tool veracrypt2hashcat (beta version from hashcat.net/beta) will tell you when something is wrong with your hash (missing entropy), this way you know you used the from flag for boot, hidden, normal and so on)

trying all possible algos would be a bad idea, just take all the hashes with length 32, or all the salted md5 styles, you would try to crack hashes not able to crack and even if the right algo is in the list, you would be able to tell if not a single hash was cracked
