Team Hashcats 8-GPUs rackserver ("only" PCI-E Gen.2 x16 based) - john99 - 04-08-2013

Hello

I am contemplating about buying a Tyan B7015F77V4R and 7970 HIS reference design GPUs :-)

Is a Tyan B7015F77V4R a good investment since it's "only" PCI-E Gen.2 x16 slots based?

Thank's in advance for any feedback!

John

I'm not exactly sure if this is the best thing to do now days, it's much better to go with GPU "cloud"... Just clustering multiple servers... Lets say 4x cards each. It will be much cheaper.

Something like - http://usa.chenbro.com/corporatesite/products_detail.php?sku=162 runs ~150$.

Two of them, 300$ + mobo's + cpu.. will run much cheaper than Tyan B7015F77V4R.
Tyan barebones without CPU/RAM/Cards cost around 4k.

There's no benefit to using PCI-e Gen 3 slots over PCI-e Gen 2 slots. Gen 3 cards still work at full speed in a Gen 2 slot.

Thank's a lot for preventing me to "loose" a lot of money! But if more machines are required, Infiniband adapters and an extensive switch is required... Or am i wrong?

I didn't know that. Great to know :-)
