Intel or AMD? - hannhimhe - 08-20-2013

It's time to add a CPU-cracker to my collection. I find myself completely lost in the CPU jungle. What to get?
AMD FX 8 cores? Intel i7 4 cores?

I have looked for reviews but found nothing. Any help is appreciated.

That would depend on your budget mostly.
Haswell CPUs are quite fast due to AVX2 instruction.
But you could buy a quad socket MB and stuff it with Opterons.

for cpu cracking, it's not only the clock rate and core count that are important, but also vector extensions as well.

haswell cpus are hot because they support AVX2, but unfortunately haswell is a mid-range processor. have to wait a while for high-end cpus with AVX2 support.

right now i would probably recommend AMD FX-9590, has XOP + 8 cores and a 5 Ghz clock.

the AMD FX-8350 does very well with blowfish and is less then $200. not sure if it has XOP.

The Vishera based cores support both AVX and XOP
