Proper Airflow and Case Selection - brav0hax - 11-14-2013

I am a newbie to this whole thing and I have already made some big mistakes. I have googled for the answers and search the forums, but can't find anything quite specific enough for me.

Instead of spending money till I get it right I thought I could ask here.

I recently bought a system (bundle) came with 2 Nvidia GTX 760's. They worked fine, though I yearned for more power (of course) so I purchased a 7990. Fits in the case fine, however I have 2 issues.

The first is airflow/heat. The case is obviously not moving the air it needs to. Is there a case you would recommend that a. Can keep the cards below 80 degrees C without having to have the side panel open? and b. Can accomodate a second card at some point keeping both cool enough?

If there is already a post you can point me to that would be great. I saw a post from someone who had like 8 of these cards in a chasis and just wonder how the hell they ventilate it well enough.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

I was hoping you'd respond because I read your post. So a full 4U server chasis is what you would recommend.

Talked to friend who told me what type of fans to get.

Are you a fan of water cooling? Is that necessary in your opinion? Saw something I was interested in, but want to understand things a bit more before I go dropping dollars.

Thanks for your response.

no, i'm definitely not a fan of water cooling.

OK great....I am looking at fans that can push 150CFM I figure 4 of those should be able to provide adequate flow and perhaps even an additional card at some point....

Thanks again,
Eric

anyone using mountain mods Ascension CYO case? looking to consolidate my two towers into one but not sure if the case will be enough to cool 4x5970s on one side and 3x5970 on the other side.

FYI, I have a large Cooler Master case (not sure of model), with 3 Delta 120mm fans (190CFM, 1 intake, 2 exhaust) running a 7990 and a 6970- I am able (in a climate controlled room at ~19C) to keep the 7990s at 75C and 72C, and the 6970 at 65C or so, with fans running 100% (this is with the 7990s at 925/1375, and the 6970 at stock clocks).

2 7990s, however, different story- it just doesn't work. The 7990 sends all its heat up to the exhaust fans, and with two cards the bottom one overheats pronto.

FWIW...

That's good to know. My current case would have the two 7990's stacked. So like you said with the fans blowing all the hot air directly on the bottom card, it probably won't have a chance...

I've thought of water cooling, but...not sure I want to go that route...

I thought with all the airflow the Delta fans give that it would work with the 7990s; it wasn't even close, overheated within 30 seconds.

7990 on top with a reference 6970 on the bottom works fine, however.

Def good to know since my original plan was 2 7990's with Delta fans Wink
