BOM - 2x R9 290X - Rackmount Chassis - nebukazar - 10-24-2014 Hello guys, I'm currently in the process of building an hashcat server. The main purpose of the box would be cracking NTLM and WEP hash. I was thinking building the box with the following BOM: MOBO: 1x ASUS Z97-PRO CPU: 1x BX80646I34130T (Core i3-4130T) RAM: 1x F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL (G.Skill Ripjars X Series 16GB (4x 4GB) HDD: 1x SSDSC2BB240G401 (Intel S3500 240GB SSD) GPU: 2x 100361-2SR (SAPPHIRE TRI-X OC 100361-2SR Radeon R9 290X 4GB) However, I am still figuring out which chassis to use. I was looking into getting a 1U chassis from supermicro, however, the only available chassis use proprietary mobo form factor. As for the PSU, I was looking into getting something that is rated 80 plus gold certified. Any advice regarding which rackmount chassis, compatible with an ATX form factor, would be appreciated ! Thank you guys; it is an awesome community btw. Cheers, RE: BOM - 2x R9 290X - Rackmount Chassis - undeath - 10-24-2014 If you have to pay for your power I recommend 980 over 290X. Are you considering using more than two GPUs later? Or will you stick to two? RE: BOM - 2x R9 290X - Rackmount Chassis - epixoip - 10-25-2014 1U and 2U rackmount will not work with GPUs that have top-mounted power plugs, which is currently every GPU to date that has been worthwhile for hash cracking. So you'll have to go 4U. The GPU you have specified is OEM design, not reference design. This is a poor decision. I agree with undeath, even if you don't pay for power. The GTX 980 is an amazing card. Also, why only two GPUs? RE: BOM - 2x R9 290X - Rackmount Chassis - nebukazar - 10-27-2014 undeath and epixoip, Thank you both for your feedback; it is greatly appreciated! I've updated my BOM with the following: CHASSIS: 1x RM41300-FS81 (Chenbro Rackmount 4U) PSU: 1x LEPA G1600 MOBO: 1x ASUS Z97-PRO CPU: 1x BX80646I34130T (Core i3-4130T) RAM: 1x F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL (G.Skill Ripjars X Series 16GB (4x 4GB) HDD: 1x SSDSC2BB240G401 (Intel S3500 240GB SSD) GPU: 3x 21226-00-40G (Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB GDDR5 | 1000 MHz Clock, 5000 MHz Memory | PCI-Express 3.0) I'm on a limited budget, hence why 3x GPUs is kind of the maximum I tend to use. Also, I want to maximize the airflow between each cards. I understand that I might need to upgrade the actual fans to some Delta Fans on the chassis from what I've read. This is all kind of new to me; I appreciate very much all of your recommendations. Cheers, RE: BOM - 2x R9 290X - Rackmount Chassis - epixoip - 10-27-2014 that motherboard is kind of an awkward choice (visualize the card layout), but everything else is solid. Excellent ! Is there any reason why the mobo wouldn't be a good choice ? Is it in term of how the slots are positioned ? RE: BOM - 2x R9 290X - Rackmount Chassis - epixoip - 10-27-2014 yes, the slot layout is awkward. it will work, it's just not symmetrical. |
