GTX 1080 FE overclock - elidell - 05-11-2017

Im very new to all this and have my system running with a GTX 1080 Founders Edition from Nvidia

I did a quick test on a wpa2 hash with rockyou.txt  and this was the output:

Code:
Session..........: hashcat
Status...........: Cracked
Hash.Type........: WPA/WPA2
Hash.Target......: Documents/HouseE2.hccapx
Time.Started.....: Thu May 11 16:40:09 2017 (27 secs)
Time.Estimated...: Thu May 11 16:40:36 2017 (0 secs)
Guess.Base.......: File (Documents/wordlists/rockyou.txt)
Guess.Queue......: 1/1 (100.00%)
Speed.Dev.#2.....:   345.0 kH/s (49.09ms)

HWMon.Dev.#2.....: Temp: 57c Fan: 37% Util:100% Core:1847MHz Mem:4513MHz Bus:16

This is a very significant improvement than a cpu attempt which took about 2 hours..  But im wondering if i should do anything to optimize the GPU, how do i overclock, and/or does hashcat automatically optimize the GPU

RE: GTX 1080 FE overclock - epixoip - 05-12-2017

You should be able to get at least 400 KH/s out of a GTX 1080 on stock clocks. Look at raising the power limit and changing the PowerMizer mode before you start overclocking.

RE: GTX 1080 FE overclock - elidell - 05-12-2017

you mean in the NVIDIA X Server Settings? I tried that and it still cracks at the same speed to the second.. i'll try again and check the kH/s

RE: GTX 1080 FE overclock - elidell - 05-12-2017

Ok, weird.. it defaulted back, but just changed it again to Maximum Performance and got 341.9 kH/s (48.77ms) so even less on the kH/s hmm.. what could be the problem? I am NOT using a riser.. plugged directly into the pci slot.

my watt consumption jumps from around 70 to about 220 when running hashcat

Start here:

Then raise the power limit with `nvidia-smi -pl <limit>`

I tried that, but its already at its max of 217..  I am thinking i need to up the temp threshold, because if i monitor close, i get up to 400 but as soon as the temp gets up to 75c it seems to start throttling down back to around 350

RE: GTX 1080 FE overclock - elidell - 05-12-2017

could part of the problem be the display that is also running on that card at 3440x1440?

RE: GTX 1080 FE overclock - elidell - 05-13-2017

Ok so right now i have the power limit set to the max 217, and im running it with a evga hybrid all in one water cooler block.. its running at 39 degrees celcius and still I am only getting around 370kH/s

any ideas?

Overclock with nvidia-settings commands:

Code:
nvidia-settings -a GPUPowerMizerMode=1 --ctrl-display=:0
nvidia-settings -a GPUGraphicsClockOffset[3]=200 --ctrl-display=:0
nvidia-settings -a GPUFanControlState=1 --ctrl-display=:0

The above example sets the clock to +200 Mhz faster than the factory clock.  Also, the fan control state can be controlled by hashcat with --gpu-temp-retain.  Manual control of the fan isn't strictly necessary, which makes that bottom line optional.

In order to reset, you might need to do this:

Code:
nvidia-settings -a GPUGraphicsClockOffset[3]=0 --ctrl-display=:0
nvidia-settings -a GPUPowerMizerMode=0 --ctrl-display=:0
nvidia-settings -a GPUFanControlState=0 --ctrl-display=:0

You might need to do this first, before the above.

Code:
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

nvidia-xconfig -s -a --force-generate --allow-empty-initial-configuration \
   --cool-bits=12 --registry-dwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222" \
   --no-sli --connected-monitor="DFP-0" -o /etc/X11/xorg.conf

sed -i '/Driver/a     Option         "Interactive" "False"' /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Cool bits needs the proper settings.  You might need to reboot after you set this.
