Hashcat slows down after staring attack. - disonesto - 02-14-2018
Hi everyone.
I have a Titan xp getting awesome bench marks. But When it comes down to using hashcat it slows down drastically.
I am testing it on hash mode 2500 wpa, benchmarked hash mode 2500. 655.8 kH's
When I go to use hashcat it slows down to 8000-9000 H's.
Test file password is 1234567890
And when I use hashcat with -w 3 or 4. It just hangs at 0% progress. But gpu is utilized almost 100%
What do I have to fix to make it work properly ?
Gpu drivers 390.25
Cuda Toolkit 9.1

RE: Hashcat slows down after staring attack. - philsmd - 02-14-2018
You are trying to crack 779 networks. The benchmark only uses 1 single network to find out the maximum speed.
The huge number of networks will reduce the overall speed almost linearly.
The more networks that you want to crack, the less speed.
Try to test with the example hash from https://hashcat.net/wiki/example_hashes
it should give you the full speed because it only contains 1 single network.
The speed at the beginning of your run is not yet correct, but after some minutes hashcat will show you the average/correct speed. This is why it seems that the speed dropped, while it didn't. It's just because you have a large hccapx file with many networks in it.
RE: Hashcat slows down after staring attack. - disonesto - 02-15-2018
Can you please help me with the command to reduce the size? I been looking online and also downloaded the hashcat-utils v1.8 but cant figure out how to reduce its size.
I am able to convert the .cap to .hccapx
I tried WPACLEAN but that didn't work out
Can you please help with the command to clean\reduce the .cap file
RE: Hashcat slows down after staring attack. - philsmd - 02-15-2018
In theory you could just split your hccapx file into 779 equally large files (the size of 1 hccapx struct is also mentioned here: https://hashcat.net/wiki/doku.php?id=hccapx , it currently is 393 bytes)
Code: split -b 393 newtest.hccapx newtest.hccapx_
The newly created files newtest.hccapx_aa etc contain the individual networks.
You could also use more advanced tools like https://github.com/ZerBea/hcxtools to extract the networks correctly (and filter them) starting with the original cap file. You can also use the tools provided by hcxtools to get information about your single hccapx files (but be aware that this is a 3rd party tool and we won't give you support about these 3rd party tools here)
RE: Hashcat slows down after staring attack. - disonesto - 02-15-2018
I'll have to try that out next week. When I get back.
I also read on the forums wireshark to filter give that a try as well. I'll let you know when I get back next Tuesday
Thanks

Hey thanks for the help. But I find using wireshark easy method to clean the .cap file.
RE: Hashcat slows down after staring attack. - soxrok2212 - 02-27-2018
I would avoid splitting it into 779 files. Instead, open up the .cap in Wireshark and filter out one single handshake with a beacon for that network. Be sure the handshake is all part of one single exchange. Then go ahead and convert to HCCAPX. Sometimes, for whatever reason, Hashcat sees it as 2 networks after cleaning but it doesn't result in a performance drop and runs at full speed. WPAclean is awful. The tools that philsmd recommended from https://github.com/ZerBea/hcxtools are a much better and safer alternative.
