New rig
#1
Hello all,
Been using hashcat for a few years just on my regular PC I use for gaming and other activities and I have had success with it and a lot of fun but I thought it was time to invest in an exclusive dedicated cracking rig.

I have mused over the following configuration and was wondering what the forums thoughts were on it.

X

AMD Ryzen 5 3500X

MSI X470 GAMING PLUS MAX Motherboard

Corsair RM1000x 1000W Power Supply

Corsair CMW64GX4M2E3200C16 Vengeance RGB PRO 64GB 3200MHz DDR4

Seagate FireCuda 510 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD

MSI Radeon RX 6900 XT GAMING X TRIO 16GB, 16GB

Thermaltake Pacific CL360 Max D5 Hard Tube Water Cooling Kit

Thermaltake Core P5 Tempered Glass Ti Edition ATX Case, Window, No PSU

I plan to install more GPUs in the future as I get more money. The single GPU and CPU I have used for some time now for cracking both had water coolers with radiators already attached when I got them and the water cooling worked really well at keeping temps respectable while under full load for days. Never steped out and built my own water cooling system from scratch though. I thought about going down this path due to the fact it opens options to add in more GPUs with water cooling blocks in the future and just add it to the system. So yeah just thought I would reach out on the forum first to see what the consensus was and if any more experienced crackers and crypt analysis people could give me any advice.

Any advice greatly appreciated thanks!

If you're willing to go to all that expense why not go balls-deep on the PSU and spec' a 1500W unit? (which may even prove inadequate depending on future GPU additions.) If you own your own home it would be advisable to look into a dedicated 20 Amp circuit for the rig. Handy Space Heater if you live in a 'cold winter' State....

Thanks man! I upgraded to the Saphhire 6900 xt toxic water cooled! And I also dropped  the custom water cooling kit because of this and got a corsair water cooler for cpu. 2 x 3 fan radiators they are huge!

Yeah in hindsight i shoulda gotten a fat power supply. But tbh after the upgrade to the sapphire toxic with its own build in water cooler i got two huge radiators so not sure where if at all if u could fir a 2nd gpu lol

Your issue is well known on several distributions and there are many solutions to fix it:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions...om-efi-vga
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions...175621795/
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=261916

BTW:
You'll need ROCM. Only a few distributions are official supported by ROCM.
K A L I is not among them
https://rocmdocs.amd.com/en/latest/Insta...ng-systems
So it's not a good idea to use this distribution (especially if it is unconfigured, or you are an unexperienced user).
You may have noticed that the forum bot changed K A L I to "The-Distribution-Which-Does-Not-Handle-OpenCL-Well".

Is there anyway The-Distribution-Which-Does-Not-Handle-OpenCL-Well (Kali) can work? Like I am willing to work on it but can't even get a shell or a login. Have tried the edit mode in grub but not sure where to go from there. AM wondering how did that guy on here post bench marks for Hashcat with the 6900 xt if no love with linux distros? Like understand it not working but i cant even get it to boot lol. Would choosing the different server during install help? I am wondering also why the first graphical interface install worked fine but others didnt

To let it work or not depend on your knowledge of and experience with Linux.
I recommend to try a user friendly distribution like UBUNTU (latest version) for your initial tests.

BTW:
Gentoo is running into that issue, too:

I am probably of a medium level with linux. Not a beginner like I have solved challenging problems before but by no means on the level of writing stuff or building my own kernel etc. But would defiantly put in the work to get the job done and learn its just about know what to do so i can do it. Kinda frustrating if i got all this hardware and cant use it with The-Distribution-Which-Does-Not-Handle-OpenCL-Well (Kali) at all like not even to boot into it. I woulda got NVIDIA if i had of known it was gonna be this much of a pain in the ass. I use Linux mint on my main machine and The-Distribution-Which-Does-Not-Handle-OpenCL-Well (Kali) on my laptop.

Trying to pin point the issue but just so bizarre i cant even boot into recovery mode even.

But as always your help and any advice you have is greatly appreciated!

Mint is a nice distribution and easy to handle and good for daily use.
While K A L I is a penetration testing distribution and nearly every penetration testing tool is installed by default.
K A L I is neither easy to configure nor easy to use.

AMD recommend the use of Ubuntu, CentOS RHEL or SLES 15 Service Pack 2.
So you should try on of them first.

BTW:
You mentioned NVIDA. Mostly NVIDIA drivers are working out of the box, but not in every case.
On my notebook, I'm running a RYZEN with integrated GPU and a GTX1650. It took me several hours, to let this combination work as expected (running Arch Linx).

I'll say, you assembled a special rig. In that case you can't expect, that a distribution like K A L I is working out of the box.
