The 1080 is better than the Titan X in terms of perf/$ ratio. You can see benchmarks here...

So as you see the 1080 is faster, and draws less power. (power specs were grabbed right from the geforce dot com)
I have ran both cards and never over heated. Most of the overheating issues in the past came from AMD GPUs drawing too much power. In a properly cooled system you shouldn't run into any problems. Both cards are reliable in terms of password cracking. You will be better off with the 1080 though.
