GPU / Comp Crash - dlux22 - 11-09-2013

I used to run a Nvida GTX650 and was using hashcat-plus and was working fine, although was very slow.

I have now upgraded to ATI Radeon HD6990, but when I run hashcat-plus after about a minute, my screen goes blank/black, although the computer is still running as if the GPU has failed/overheated I think, is there any solution for this, like maybe reduce the usage of the GPU?

Thanks if you can help.

RE: GPU / Comp Crash - Szulik - 11-09-2013

hmmm, i got similar issue what hashcat run with full speed and try view video on YouTube. it was sth like screen driver was recovered but in my case i still see windwos pulpit. Try run hashcat and do nothing more on Your PC

I only had browser open as well, nothing else, and it happens, thanks for trying to help though, maybe there is some option to run the GPU at 3/4 speed?

You can manually lower gpu clock rate

How do I go about doing that?

RE: GPU / Comp Crash - Szulik - 11-10-2013

in windows catalyst control center AMD OverDrive

RE: GPU / Comp Crash - dlux22 - 11-10-2013

I've been playing around with the hashcat settings:

oclhashcat-plus64.exe -m 2500 -a 3 pentest.hccap Z?u?u?u?u?u?u?u --gpu-accel=40 - monitor off
oclhashcat-plus64.exe -m 2500 -a 3 pentest.hccap Z?u?u?u?u?u?u?u --gpu-accel=8 - monitor off
oclhashcat-plus64.exe -m 2500 -a 3 pentest.hccap Z?u?u?u?u?u?u?u --gpu-accel=5 - monitor off after 2 mins
oclhashcat-plus64.exe -m 2500 -a 3 pentest.hccap Z?u?u?u?u?u?u?u --gpu-accel=2 - burning smell, turns off after 5mins
oclhashcat-plus64.exe -m 2500 -a 3 pentest.hccap Z?u?u?u?u?u?u?u --gpu-accel=1 - running 10mins so far, really slow though - Speed.GPU.#*...: 58150 H/s , when at full it's 142983 H/s, so almost half the speed it is capable of.
I'm wondering if I should try the --gpu-loops=NUM ?
Or maybe I need to get some liquid cooling although it already has - Accelero Twin Turbo Cooling ?

On overclock settings in Catalyst Control Center, Fan is only at default 50%, change to 100%? + anything else?

RE: GPU / Comp Crash - atom - 11-11-2013

for WPA you can use -u 4096 for max performance (and max screen lag)

Well that made my screen go black straight away, I don't want max performance i want like 75% so that i can still use my computer and the GPU doesn't overheat...

RE: GPU / Comp Crash - dlux22 - 11-11-2013

Best solution for this I found was to reduce the High Performance GPU Clock Settings from the default 880Mhz down to the lowest 500Mhz and increase the Fan to 100% and am now getting - Speed.GPU.#*...: 108.6 kH/s
although it can go up to 142.5kH/s , but at least it won't freeze/crash.
Just using the normal command :
oclhashcat-plus64.exe -m 2500 -a 3 pentest.hccap Z?u?u?u?u?u?u?u

Time.Estimated.: Tue Nov 12 14:48:38 2013 (20 hours, 46 mins)
Speed.GPU.#1...: 40903 H/s
Speed.GPU.#2...: 67146 H/s
Speed.GPU.#*...: 108.0 kH/s
Recovered......: 0/1 (0.00%) Digests, 0/1 (0.00%) Salts
Progress.......: 26148864/8031810176 (0.33%)
Rejected.......: 0/26148864 (0.00%)
HWMon.GPU.#1...: 87% Util, 51c Temp, 100% Fan
HWMon.GPU.#2...: 87% Util, 50c Temp, 100% Fan

EDIT: Just played a youtube video, then the screen went blank (GPU crashed) again...
