Which 1080, or Titan X? - pragmatic - 09-29-2016
Hello all,
I have an aging FT77 rig with 8 x 7970's in it that I'm looking to update. From what I can tell the Titan X cards are the latest and greatest, but probably not worth the extra money compared to the 1080's. At this point I'm leaning towards getting 4 x 1080's to make cooling less of an issue.
Assuming people agree with the notion of getting 1080's instead of Titan X's, is there a specific model of 1080 that people have found more reliable? I don't mind paying a bit more; I just want it to not overheat/throttle all the time or die in a few months.
I'm looking at the PNY's as they seem decent, but I'm also confused as to what I'm seeing as I search around.

The first is $700, the other is $1000, and as far as I can tell they are the exact same card.

The 1080 is better than the Titan X in terms of perf/$ ratio. You can see benchmarks here...

So as you see the 1080 is faster, and draws less power. (power specs were grabbed right from the geforce dot com)
I have ran both cards and never over heated. Most of the overheating issues in the past came from AMD GPUs drawing too much power. In a properly cooled system you shouldn't run into any problems. Both cards are reliable in terms of password cracking. You will be better off with the 1080 though.

Any recommendations on a particular card, or why those cards are so dramatically different price-wise when they seem the same?

it is the same card,
maybe they forgot to update their price or they just want to make money for ppl that didnt want to wait for stock..

One is sold and shipped by newegg, the other is sold and shipped by etopsell.

Bought the rig, although it had 6990s or something like that at the time. Upgraded to the 7970s shortly after and it's been that way since.
And thanks darkseid, i feel like an idiot for not noticing that but at least it answers the question about why they looked so similar.
Are the PNY FE cards like this considered solid?

yes, well all FE are the same (refference cards) no change was made to them.
u will need to change the drivers etc.. i guess u know that

PNY is fine. 3 yrs warranty.
ZOTAC has 5 yrs warranty, but might be slightly more expensive.
got both, both are ok!
