That statement doesn't make sense without the full context.
Does hashcat even list all the OpenCL-supported CPU devices at the start ? Did you install the driver that I mentioned and which is also mentioned here (https://hashcat.net/hashcat/) ? Does the tool "clinfo" list all the CPUs ?
of course a VM makes it even more complicated with the correct driver installation etc, but I think I already saw some guys running benchmarks of hashcat with CPUs hosted on a AWS server. so probably not impossible, but maybe a little bit more complicated to install the OpenCL Runtime in an VM.
next time please don't forget to state exactly what you did try so far (including mentioning what CPU drivers you installed etc). This is crucial information. Thx
