r9 270x driver issue

I'm getting an unsupported or incorrect GPU driver message.
Did a bunch of searching, but nothing popped out at me.

Fresh The-Distribution-Which-Does-Not-Handle-OpenCL-Well (Kali) 1.09a install
MSI r9 270X (two cards)
Asus sabertooth MoBo (with onboard video disabled via UEIF/BIOS - I think)

Catalyst version : 14.10.1006.1001 (OpenGL 4.4.12874) installed via blackMore Ops guide (though for The-Distribution-Which-Does-Not-Handle-OpenCL-Well (Kali) 1.06)

fglrxinfo
fgl_glxgears
both run

clinfo comes up as command not found

lsmod shows asus_wmi for video, I'm thinking this is my prob.

(and just an oddball question, for the two GPU cards do I need to use the SLI cable? Its off right now)
