You should not double-click on the icon for hashcat. That will definitely give you the "classic environment" warning, but this is a misleading message.
I run OSX Mavericks, and can use hashcat 0.46 with no problems. As a test, I just ran a quick brute-force against the A0.M0.hash file, and it worked fine.
I would recommend you re-read the wiki on how to use hashcat, as you are most likely not passing the proper command-line arguments.
