Hey, new to the forums
My grfx card recently got damaged and I have to buy a new one. Since I'll be buying a new rig soon, I dont wanna spend alot of of money on this one so, what are some good GPU's (cheap
) which is good for password recovery ? I'll be doing a bit of gaming too.
Here are a few which I found:
Sapphire AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6450 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card
ZOTAC NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 Synergy Edition 2 GB DDR3
Gainward NVIDIA 2GB DDR3 GT610 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card(Not to sure about this one)
Any other GPU suggestions will be nice too.
Thanks in Advance

if your focus is on hash cracking then avoid nvidia.
check out
http://www.gat3way.eu/est.php and look at the MH/s columns for each GPU. this will give you a good idea of what to buy.
you may also want to check out the MH/s/$ columns on
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison as it will help show you which cards will get you the best bang for your buck.

Thnx. But in my case the ATI has more overall Cores (160) but the nVidia(s) has just 48 CUDA Cores. Does CUDA actually make a difference ?

i wonder, do you know what the word "avoid" means?

Buy a used 7970.
Failing that, perhaps a 7950.
If you plan to do hash cracking, avoid nVidia, and I'd stay clear of the 6xxx cards, as their internal architecture is not nearly as flexible as the 7xxx series.

7970 is the best GPU hardware for cracking purposes. Well....except for sha512/whirlpool-related stuff. For those cases, nvidia could even turn out to be faster. But then, it's not as much energy-efficient and definitely not as much cost-efficient.

Yes, but edge cases do not a good card make, for most people. The bulk of the hashes out there are MUCH better served by AMD than nVidia, at least right now.

But HD7970 is far from 'budget gpu' and man here talks about <60$ GPU's.

7970 is a budget GPU -- you just have to budget a little more for it. And considering its MSRP was half of what the 6990 was, it's quite a bargain.
but seriously, don't waste your money on cheap, low-end cards. they aren't going to perform the way you're expecting them to, and a lot of the low end cards have problems with compute.
