Most likely the cause is the hash you're trying to crack isn't the type you've told ocl to crack or the wrong format, etc. If you'd provide more details, e.g., the command that gives you the error and the hash type (probably MD5) it'd be easier to give a possible reason why.

what does this mean?

oclhc+ does not support usernames > 8 chars when cracking dcc (see my previous thread below and atom's answer). oclhc does, so go for bruteforcing/mask.
