Choosing budget GPU woes
#1
Looking to upgrade my old GPU as its dated, and since I have been tinkering with WPA cracking for fun, I figured I might as well get a GPU that could be used for that as well.

My current desktop GPU gets me around 5000 p/s which seems slow, I tried installing another GPU with a defective heatsink (an HD 5850) which gave me around 50.000 p/s but tempt out after a few minutes.

I am hoping to get something under 100£ that would beat my 5850 significantly and still be relatively silent/cool when idle- preferably with 2 DVI outputs as my old monitors only have that input and I would not have to buy converters.

It seems super confusing that AMD changed their naming scheme, but I found the post in here that somewhat helps with that:

R5 210 => HD 5450/6350/7350
R5 220 => HD 6450/7450
R5 230 => HD 7470
R7 240 => Crippled version of HD 8570
R7 250 => HD 8570
R7 260 => Re-worked HD 7770 with 128 more stream processors
R7 260X => HD 7790
R9 270 => Re-worked HD 7870
R9 270X => Re-worked HD 7870
R9 280 => HD 7970
R9 280X => HD 7970 Ghz Edition
R9 290 => Re-worked and underclocked HD 7970 with 512 more stream processors
R9 290X => Re-worked and underclocked HD 7970 with 768 more stream processors

And a prioritized list of the best GPU's:
1. Nvidia GTX 980 reference design
2. Nvidia GTX 970 reference design
3. AMD R9 290X reference design
4. AMD Radeon HD 7970 reference design
5. AMD Radeon HD 7950 reference design
6. Nvidia GTX 750Ti (only OEM design available, but that's ok)
7. AMD Radeon HD 5970 (only available as reference design)
8. AMD Radeon HD 6970 reference design
9. AMD Radeon HD 5870 reference design

But these are the top notch GPU's and seemingly a little on the expensive side for my budget or hard to find due to age.

Edit: Managed to find this list of GPU/WPA crack ratio, that seems to give at least some direction..

My questions are:
1. Should I stay in the AMD camp, or would Nvidia be better for my needs (low price, cool running)
2. Is there a table/chart somewhere with comparable p/sec - I haven't been able to find one
3. Is there a GPU that seems perfect for my needs ?

I personally "upgraded" my 5850 with a 750Ti. This is as far as you can get with 100£ but the performance is about the same. You would get about the same performance at half the power consumption and less heat.

If you want something better you will need to pay more. I recommend the 970 in your case. Screw AMD.

Over potential 5000 customers from this Forum alone and AMD don't hear them, don't take them seriously, even when Atom told them a fault they don't bother to mobilize their force to fix their driver quickly.

AMD seems to sleep-walking to the dump.

I think amd is not so bad.

I think you should invest in hd7970/r9 280x in my country used are for 120-130£ and you will got 5x more power then now.
With nvidia only models 970 and 980 are good for BF but price is much higher then AMD.

with ATI 5970 I got for WPA/WPA2 115K w/s, with R9 280x or HD7970 I have got what? 220K w/s? So definitely not 5x power.

The problem is the driver it is frustration that hashcat is improved and improved and the drive slow it down and slower it down. AMD used to be good in version 9, 10, there it overcame even nvidia in performance, power consumption and price, but later ... If you see that nvidia takes now the lead again in every field, there is no wonder, think why

Thank you all for the replies, I've looked into the various cards suggested and it seems that the AMD ones require more power than my 525W PSU can provide- also the AMD ones seem to get really warm- which my very cool/silent setup wouldn't like.

As far as I understood, the GTX750Ti would give me about the same p/sec as my old (not sufficiently cooled) HD5850. So maybe it would be easier/cheaper for me to fix the cooling than to buy a GPU with roughly the same performance- although I can see it runs a lot cooler with less power.

What would the next step in Nvidia GPU's be up from the GTX750Ti with regards to WPA p/s- seeing as I cant always count on price or generation to corrolate with that performance ?

Why you compare 5970 when user got 5850 lots slower card.

Ended up buying a 5870 on ebay for very little.

Strangely I eneded up with old "bigbrother" to my dated 5850, but it seems the best bang for the buck in this case Smile

thanks for the respones to everyone

Edit: Card recieved and worked like a charm. WPA/s between 90k and 93k around 70C Smile
