Yet Another Build Review
#1
Information
I've read just about every build suggestion on here & have several pages of notes, but this is my first build so I'm still a bit anxious about it. I'm hoping someone with experience can look over what I've got here for any obvious flaws.

Case: CHENBRO RM41300-FS81 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6811123178
Mobo: ASRock Z170 OC  - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813157649
CPU: Quad core i7 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819116987
GPUs: 4x  GTX 980s - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814133563
RAM: 16GB DDR4 (2 x 8GB)
Storage:  5x 2TB HDs RAID 5 (8TB total) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6822148910
OS: 120GB SSD (Samsung 850 EVO) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...12K2EV4048
Power: 1600W Lepa G1600 Power Supply - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6817494006

Total: $3,779

I've also seen epixoip recommend 3 extra fans to go with the CHENBRO case, but I'm not really sure where those should go.

I appreciate your thoughts &/or suggestions.

I have no clue why you need 5x 2TB drives, but that chassis only has like 3 internal 3.25" drive bays. Sounds like you should probably pick up a NAS or something in addition to this build, instead of trying to do multiple things with this build. Also you're going to need an EZConvert MB882SP-1S-2B or similar to mount that 2.5" SSD in that chassis.

Also I wouldn't go with that PSU, you likely saw that in an old recommendation from me. There are much better PSUs available now.

The three fans you saw me mention are not extra fans, they are replacement fans. As in you remove the existing fans and replace them with those fans.

We've got several collections of rainbow tables & dictionaries, etc. The thought was to host all that on one box. That's probably too much space, but I shot high. I figured we could throw a few of the drives in the 5.25 drive bays with appropriate adapters.

That's exactly where I got it. Out of curiosity, and ignorance, what makes a particular PSU better other than the power output?

That makes perfect sense. Thanks!

Ditch the rainbow tables. Seriously. They were worthless in 2010 when most everyone stopped using them, they were still worthless in 2012 when everyone else stopped using them, and they're even more worthless in 2016. You're the last hold out, it seems.

Efficiency and quality make a particular PSU better. With 4x 980 you should be looking at something in the 1200W range, 80plus Platinum or Titanium.

Thanks for the advice. I've never had a system that could run hashcat well enough to offset the speed of tables for some hash types.

Consider changing your ssd to Intel 750 series. It's great and working with big dictionaries on such hardware is really smooth. That would also require checking your mobo's compatibility witn NVMe.

Take a look at this post https://hashcat.net/forum/thread-4970.html

This is the guide I used, only issue I had was clearance for CPU Cooler, go with a low profile one or it will hit the fans on the top of the case.
