Hi, I am looking for a performance upgrade, but I am not sure which way to go. At the moment I am using oclHashcat with a wordlist and a rule file to attack various encrypted containers with the following hashtypes:
PBKDF2-HMAC-RipeMD160,PBKDF2HMACSHA512,PBKDF2-HMAC-Whirlpool.
I currently have a z77-d3h mobo,i5, overclocked 7950 and have a spare second pcie x16 slot which runs at x4. What is the best bang for the buck upgrade ? Install a second card and if so what do you recommend (ideally something not used and newer than the 7950) ? or forget the multi gpu setup and sell the 7950 and get something like a 970 or r9 390 single card upgrade ?
Thanks

Forget AMD. Currently the best GPUs are GTX 970, 980, 980 Ti, and Titan X. Any of them will be an upgrade over your current HD 7950.

Does anyone who's seeking for GPU advice read any of the prior posts? No, wait, don't answer, it's too obvious...

Ok, can I run a 970 and a 7950 in that mobo at the same time to get even better cracking speed ? Will this work in oclHashcat because one of the pcie x16 slots is limited to x4 speed ? Is it just a case of using the two different binaries of oclHashcat?
Thanks again

You can use two kinds of different GPU at the same time. I run GTX 970 and R9 390x on the same mobo at the same time. My OS is windows7, 64bit, using oclHashcatv2.10b134.
But as epixoip said

AMD GPUs are very hot and have a very high power consumption. Forget AMD as soon as possible.
You can read the following thread for details about oclHashcatv2.10.
Get rid of CUDA
