GTX 1080 FE Temperature & Power Requirements
#1
Hello,

I just bought 2 x GTX 1080 FE to replace my old 2 x R9 280X. I place the cards side by side and not having any spaces like I used to do when using my old R9 280X (I have 4 actually but can only use 2 because of heat issue). When testing cracking hashes using the 2 x GTX 1080 FE, the temperature goes up to 90 Celsius after more than 5 minutes and hashcat aborted.

What temperature should I expect for these 2 x GTX 1080 FE running hashcat? Im getting about max 85 to 87 Celsius doing the same thing with my old 2 x R9 280X cards (non reference) and with the casing side panel open.

Should I be getting the delta fans for this to help with the cooling and so that I can run with my casing side panel close?

I'm planning to get 2 more GTX 1080 FE to make it 4 in total. Will the 1200W PSU be sufficient? How to calculate the power requirement for this.

185 W per card x 4 is about 740 W.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Azren

You need to push the fans up. They should run < 70C with the fans at 100%. No, you don't need Delta fans to cool a 185W GPU, but you should probably put the side panel back on the case. You literally just calculated the power requirements so I'm not sure why you're asking. Although you should probably use the TPB of 225W to be safe, and PSUs are most efficient when ran at 50% load if you care about that kind of thing.

The fans are already forced to run at 100% (plus the power limit 120%). But I'm still getting > 70C. I've tested both side panel off and on the case with no luck.

Thanks.

Something isn't right then, but I'm not sure what. I assume you didn't remove the second half of the backplate to allow airflow into the card on the right (that's why it's removable), but that wouldn't explain the high temps for the GPU on the left. Are you positive the GPU fans are actually running at 100%? Can you hear them get louder when you set the fan speed?

Hi epixoip,

I didn't remove the second half of the backplate on both cards. I'm sure that the GPU fans are running at 100% as I can hear them getting louder when I forced them to run at 100%

Ok so Dev3 is running 15C hotter than Dev4, I bet if you remove the second half of the backplate on Dev4 that Dev3 will run a lot cooler. Don't take it off both cards, just the cards where the backplate is hindering intake air on adjacent GPUs.
#7
Thanks. That helps to bring down the temp for dev3. Now dev3 is only about 6C hotter than dev4.

Any idea why the cards are running more than 70C?

Best regards,
Azren

72-75C is within normal range. As long as you are < 80C you will not throttle.

not the same cards as yours but the only way I could get my rig to run below 90C was to permanently attached a box fan to it.  squeezing that many cards in a tower required some creativity and it was a $30 solution.
