Feedback on 1080

Question 
Hi,

I would like to buy an 1080 to replace my GTX 980, and would have your feedbacks on these 3 cards :

Nvidia's website :

2560 cores - 1607 Mhz (base) - 1733 Mhz (boost)
-> reference design


MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition

2560 cores - 1607 Mhz (base) - 1733 Mhz (boost)
=> This card looks like the Nvidia one, isn't it ?! What's the differences ?


MSI 1080 Gaming version

2560 cores - 1607 Mhz (base) - 1847 MHz (boost)

The last one is more boosted than Nvidia's one. It should crack faster ?

Last thing, price : more than $800-$900 in Europe. Does it worth this - high - price?

If I got it right these new Founders Edition Models are basically reference design cards, just a 'new name'.
So there shouldn't be a difference between the first 2 cards.

In general it should all be the same as before, reference > custom with the same arguments you have for buying reference design cards.

Even if I'm pretty sure the things I said are true feel free to correct me, looking at you epixoip Wink

the gaming eddition of msi should crack hashes faster yes. but i dont really see why doing it, if u can just overclock manual lets say with after burner of msi.
and the suggestion is to take an reffernce card for cracking hashes.

about the price its up to u.., i guess if u wait 2-4 weeks the price will go down..

yes two of the cards are the same.
Founder edition = Refference card

No, the MSI "Gaming Edition" will not crack hashes faster. This is like the 6th post I've seen where kiara is spouting pure bullshit. It might be clocked higher out of the box, but that means nothing since its cooler cannot cope with compute workloads and thus will throttle sooner and harder. The ref design might be clocked lower out of the box but you can always change that.

Ok thank you epixoip for this, that's what I read everywhere but wanna be sure.

For reference cards, if I buy on Nvidia's website, as they don't manufacture the cards but only the GPU, they are able to send me a MSI or Asus reference cards right ?

Cards purchased from the Nvidia webstore are just branded "Nvidia," there is no indication as to who the actual manufacturer is. But it doesn't matter, all ref design cards adhere to the ref spec and are created equal.

i am happy to be corrected if i am wrong, i learn every day.

but u cant really know how good this card is dealling with such workloads unless u have one urself and test it ur self, AND u dont know which environment will the card be in which mean its not necessarily will throttle, unless its reaching above 80-83c..

Theoretically , lets say the card wont throttle (the MSI "gaming edition"), the card should crack hashes faster?(because of an higher clock) am i right? (correct me if im wrong, dont be disrespectful every1 can be wrong)

I have a quick question about the reference 1080 and 1070--are they likely to see discounts before the end of their life or do they basically go for launch MSRP until they are replaced?

Most likely you will see a price drop on the 10th series when they gonna launch a new architecture or/and 1080ti/titan launch.

And when AMD will release its cards Smile
