External GPU rig?

I am wondering if there are any tutorials around for building an inexpensive external gnu rig for oclhashcat.  I would like to not build a whole pc out just for gnu cracking, an am wondering if there are any USB to external GPU set ups out there that work..

so would I need a usb to thunderbolt 3 adapter (machine only has usb3 inputs) or would the adapter limit my speed even more? also any good suggestions on a gnu card and adapter that would work well for the money

IIRC people have had a very difficult time getting the driver to recognize the external GPU for compute.
