Advice for Reviving Old Machine for Hashcat
#1
Hi everyone!

I got into hashcat a few days ago since I realized I can't remember the password I used for a truecrypt container I had back in 2009. I have an old pc with an i5-760, 4gb ram, and a 7870 ghz edition.

I was wondering if I should just build a new system from scratch and get a mid-range gpu or can I just get a 1070 to replace my 7870. That way I can invest in what mattered most for my need. Is this advisable or not? I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Thank you very much!

Before buying hardware make sure cracking is feasible. What do you know about the password for the truecrypt container? If you only know it is 20 characters for example you will never crack it. But if you know it started with a certain word but then had 5 characters consisting of lowercase and numbers you can succeed.

Thanks for the reply DanielG. The password couldn't have been composed of special characters. As I remember I haven't used anything like that during those years. The best scenario is that I used both upper and lower case letters and a few numbers in the end. I'm not sure if this is allowed to divulge here, but I used one 136MB password file, and a 13GB one I found while doing what 'research' I can. The password I used was not included.

I've been simulating creating another truecrypt container to find out what specific method I could have used and my best bet is mode 6213.

Right now I'm running this mask as my best bet. Otherwise, I need to expand the length and/or characters

-1 ?u?l?d -2 ?l -3 ?d?l ?1?2?2?2?2?3

With this mask it is feasible to go up to length 7 at most, I guess. This is based upon a test with my 1060, where length 7 with the mask ?1?2?2?2?2?2?3 would take 5 days.
