about Base loop

I watched a talk from Epixoip, where he talked about Hashcat acceleration, and was interested on the how the Base loop works.
If Hashcat is only using my GPU for cracking, I'm using the base loop on the CPU? or do I have to enable the CPU as a working device for Hashcat?
