I am working specifically on a 7z hash, and I plan on having to work on it for a very long time.

I currently have a laptop with a 880M, which I will keep using.  The performance is sad.

I am going to finally have access to my desktop, which is currently running a Radeon 5770.

I have this card still sealed in the box, which I have laying around.  I am not sure if I should ebay it, which I will probably get around $100 for it.  I could buy a second one for $240.  The performance looks to be about the same as the 880m I have, which is not stellar.  Two running together would be mediocre at best.

I am leaning more towards selling the sealed card and buying a radeon, as I have read that they are better for hashing.  I'm not sure what to buy.  I would like to spend no more then $350 on the card, including the $100 I get for the sale of the sealed card.

I intend to buy a second identical card down the line when I have more cash.  I might sometimes use the two cards for gaming, but 95% it will be for hashing.  I would like something with good cooling, that expels the air out the back of the case, as my cooling is not the best.

Can someone recommend a good card?  I prefer XFX because of the double lifetime warranty.  If you know of another manufacturer with a lifetime warranty, that is fine.

Thank you or the help.

I'd also suggest you check your pot file often!

I have that exact GTX 760 so decided to check the --benchmark for you (1173 H/s). However, I also ran a brute force against the example 7-zip hash on the example hashes page (pw is hashcat) and got a bit of a surprise - cudaHashcat found the password but kept running until the keyspace was exhausted!

That's how it is expected to work because there can be false-positives

(Sorry about the title, should have been "card" choice)

Well, I've read through the forums a bit and it looks like the most common recommendation is the GTX 970.  My only problem is that the only place to buy a reference design one is Best Buy and they want a ton for it.  I'm not sure what other designs are worth it.  I do like EVGA, Maybe one of the SC/ACX 2.0 like this one?  My understanding is that the reference design ones are preferred.

I hate to go with an older rebranded chip, but I was originally looking at the Radeon 390.  If I buy the XFX one from Best Buy, I get the lifetime warranty, which is nice for a card I will be running for 24/7.

I looked at the chart someone posted of the speeds of different hashes, but SHA256 isn't shown, so I don't know how the cards compare.

I will probably get two cards, stacked close, so I need a good thermal solution, so I'm really not sure which way to go.  I would much rather keep it under $350, but if I have to man up and just get the one reference card from best buy for the 970, I will.

Just looking for input.  Which will be best for dictionaries hitting a 7zip hash for a long time and for 2 stacked thermally?  Whcih actually model and where to buy would you recommend?

970 is faster than the 390, and roughly the same speed as the 390X.

If you plan to stack two cards then you absolutely do not want axial fans, so the ACX 2.0 is not the way to go, nor is the 390. You need a closed shroud with a centrifugal blower.
