Ryzen 1800X CPU with 1080 Ti GPU
#21
All right, the results are in.

I'm so sorry, guys. I know I said that the 7700K would be ~13% faster, and it's hard for me to admit this, but I was wrong.

.
.
.
.

RYZEN GOT R-R-R-REKT, SON!

MD4 - 7700K 89% faster
MD5 - 7700K 14% faster
SHA1 - 7700K 45% faster
SHA256 - 7700K 73% faster
SHA512 - 7700K 212% faster
KECCAK - 7700K 620% faster
WPA2 - 7700K 54% faster
Bitcoin Wallet - 7700K 114% faster

Now, as expected (and I failed to mention this in my previous posts but it was rather implied), the 1800X is faster for algorithms where we cannot leverage AVX2 on the 7700K, because it has twice the number of cores. For example, the 1800X is 57% faster than the 7700K on bcrypt. But for everything else the 7700K absolutely wrecks the 1800X -- while costing a fraction of the price, drawing a fraction of the power, running a hell of a lot cooler, and it even has onboard graphics which the 1800X lacks.

And speaking of AVX2, this test was important because it confirms that Ryzen's AVX2 support is a bold-faced lie. Yeah the instructions are there, but they don't have any 256-bit registers, so you gain nothing by using AVX2.

What's even more hilarious is that the 1800X isn't much faster than the 1700X with Hashcat, and the 1700X is actually faster than the 1800X for MD4/NTLM because the 1800X draws so much power and runs so hot, even with a big-ass cooler, that it has to throttle itself down below the base clock to prevent itself from imploding -- just like their GPUs! By contrast, the 7700K was able to Turbo all day long and remain quite cool.

Also the motherboard I bought for the 7700K cost like $35 and had no ability to do any overclocking. Based on how cool it ran I bet it could be overclocked even further on a better motherboard. The 1800X on the other hand ran extremely hot, even with a big-ass heatsink, and could not even maintain its base clock, let alone its Turbo clocks. We didn't dare attempt to overclock it.

So there you have it. I hate to say I told you so, but once again...

[Image: toldyall.jpg]

Wish y'all would learn to stop doubting me already, especially when it comes to AMD bullshit. It's not like I do this for a living or anything...

Why is KECCAK so much faster in 7700K?

Also how is the 7700K costing "a fraction of the price" of 1800X?
#24
I've not investigated why Keccak is so much faster. Might have something to do with the compiler.

As far as "fraction of the price" goes:

7700K $300, motherboard $40 == $340 total
1800X $460, motherboard $65 == $525 total

7700K setup is 35% cheaper. Plus the operating costs are lower since it draws less power. Also don't forget that the 1800X lacks onboard graphics, so you'll have to buy a discrete GPU as well. We used a spare 290X that we had lying around. With the 7700K we used the onboard graphics, so no discrete GPU is needed. Plus you can use the onboard graphics for an additional boost in hashrate as well.

If I don't see Kabylake's Core i7 7700K results, everything else is just opinions.
And the numbers are in - thanks epixoip!

There is no mention of hashcat and no benchmarks to compare any of the cards in that article.... not really useful really
#28
Sigh... again, this is Hashcat, and all we care about here is Hashcat, and how Hashcat performs. Vega is just more shit from the same asshole. The card is worthless for Hashcat.

This made me laugh way too hard. But I also agree Vega will be horrible.

Thank you for the Kaby lake benchmarks. I was wondering if continued AVX 512 woud make the cpu throttle down (like on AVX512 heavy loads on  Knights landing, Xeon Phi, Broadwell ...) but I am delighted to see that that it works well
