I've got an Alienware R17 V3 running a GTX 980M
Trying to crack my Ethereum Pre-Sale wallet, getting currently:
157.1 kH/s (8.98ms)
I'm a software guy, so, I've got a good buy available for $700 bucks for an
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070 Ti MINI 8GB
Would this card significantly improve my hash rate? My current password runtime is 2 days, and it's not even 'the big one' which I suspect will take a month on my current 980M.
On a side note, I've REALLY enjoyed my time here at Hashcat, what a bit of fun I'm having (in an otherwise shitty situation
)

Looks like I'm upgrading!

mobile GPUS (like the 980M, or in general GPUs for notebooks) could and do throttle a lot and therefore do not reach the same speed as a non-mobile version.
I think 1070, 1070ti, 1080 or 1080ti are all acceptable and currently recommended (at the time of this writing). We recommend founders editions GPUs because of better quality, better multi-GPU system support, better airflow, sometimes even better performance in general etc.

To be honest, that $700 price tag is WAY too high. Also, the 1070Ti performance is just a couple percent lower than a 1080 so if you can find a 1070Ti and overclock it, you'll get 1080 equivalent speeds.

Ended up grabbing a Gigabyte 1080 for $800 bucks. It might be over priced but, that's the market. Had to drive 2 hours to get it, only 2 left, no holds.
Hash went from a 2 day 160 Kh/S to a 31 minute 570 Kh/S
If I unlock my wallet it'll be more than worth it.

When you know your password or something close always build lists around that. If you are seeing if your password is crackable you can check the current dictionaries and grep for similar words. But you probably already know this
