try newest beta version of hashcat from https://hashcat.net/beta/

does the example hash from https://hashcat.net/wiki/example_hashes work for you ?

Thanks good idea. I copied the example hash into a new text file and it worked!

The I also noted a character missing at the front of my hash, '$'

Edited and created a new .txt file copied over the hash

Now getting Salt-value exception error

Found it!

Another error in my pasted hash. Putting this down to my sloppy Vi use Smile

Next up: parallelization

Currently I'm on a time est. of 1 year for 6 character '?a' ! Sad

Thanks again.

well, hard to tell, maybe it's just that slow. What's your GPU usage and benchmark result for that hash type?
