Hashcat on VPS (CPU only)
#1
Hi folks,

I'm struggling a bit with running hashcat on VPS with KVM in CPU only mode.
I installed opencl from Intel and here are some major command's output:

undeath edit: removed completely useless and excessive quote

I have to add "--force" on mine to get it to run on Intel at all... but I don't have hc 3.3 to test with I'm afraid.

--force does not work either...

Why would you even think about using these old versions of hashcat ?

Do not use --force

uninstall all the non-vendor drivers (the open source drivers like Mesa/Pocl etc)

Try to fix the clinfo error first, clinfo clearly says it failed to use this device

Code:
clCreateContext(NULL, ...) [default]            <checkNullCtx:2241: create context with device from default platform : error -2>

clCreateContext failed with error code -2

even a tool as simple as clinfo failed to use your devices

What hardware do you even use ?

You should probably better test with release, or beta version from https://hashcat.net/beta), not with older versions of hashcat.

Dear hashcat folks,
I experience a similar issue with hashcat (master branch) on CPU-only VPS. Here is my OS & CPU info:

In all three experiments below the master branch of hashcat is built and used.

1. Installing official Intel OpenCL CPU runtime (l_opencl_p_18.1.0.015) makes hashcat still complaining:
Code:
$ hashcat -m2500 -b
hashcat (v5.1.0-1861-g323e7463) starting in benchmark mode...

Benchmarking uses hand-optimized kernel code by default.
You can use it in your cracking session by setting the -O option.
Note: Using optimized kernel code limits the maximum supported password length.
To disable the optimized kernel code in benchmark mode, use the -w option.

Kernel /usr/local/share/hashcat/OpenCL/m02500-optimized.cl:
Optimized kernel requested but not needed - falling back to pure kernel

clCreateContext(): CL_DEVICE_NOT_AVAILABLE

Started: Fri Jun 12 09:08:03 2020
Stopped: Fri Jun 12 09:08:03 2020
Hashcat hangs at this point and I CTRL+C the execution. Also, clinfo hangs as well:
Code:
$ clinfo

2. I tried mesa-opencl-icd driver with no luck.
Code:
$ hashcat -m2500 -b
hashcat (v5.1.0-1855-g5775231c) starting in benchmark mode...

3. At last, I tried pocl-opencl-icd driver. But hashcat complains about an outdated driver:

But I don't want to use the outdated POCL driver, obviously. What would you suggest to try else?

Thank you.

try latest beta version of hashcat from https://hashcat.net/beta/

if it's really an intel CPU, you should install the intel OpenCL runtime from: https://software.intel.com/content/www/u...pu-section

if you really want to use POCL, use the latest version. Compile it like this (after uninstalling all the other drivers and older versions of POCL):
Code:
sudo apt install -y build-essential ocl-icd-libopencl1 cmake git pkg-config libclang-dev clang llvm make ninja-build ocl-icd-libopencl1 ocl-icd-dev ocl-icd-opencl-dev libhwloc-dev zlib1g zlib1g-dev clinfo dialog apt-utils

git clone https://github.com/pocl/pocl

cd pocl/
mkdir build/
cd build/
cmake ..
make
sudo make install

sudo cp pocl.icd /etc/OpenCL/vendors/

(see https://github.com/hashcat/hashcat/issue...-628732757)

This is equivalent to building the hashcat master branch, isn't it? Anyway, I tried it and got the same results.

This is exactly what I've done. Eventually, you need to download the 'l_opencl_p_18.1.0.015' file from their website. But then even clinfo fails to recognize the driver (it hangs). But, I mean, if my CPU is not Intel, what else could it be?

Thank you, that worked out. I get the same benchmark speed though, but at least I don't need the --force flag. In the issue you quoted you said that POCL v1.5 with LLVM 9 works as fast as Intel and may be even faster. So I guess I'll stick to POCL for a while.
